This is a easy to do project that allows viewing of root development and demonstrates the benefits of having a layer of air roots or a "dual root system" The spider plant grows quickly and easy to reproduce which is why I chose it for this project. All plants benefit from air rooting by being able to access oxygen. Yes you read it right. Oxygen. Plants are known for consuming CO2 but also consume oxygen too which helps facilitate the uptake of nutrients from the soil. So the more access to oxygen your roots have access to the faster the plant can process food for growth. The green cup filters out the spectrum of light necessary for the plant to photosynthesize because the roots will behave like leaves and start to produce chlorophyll and photosynthesis if they are exposed to light. Once that happens the root stops processing nutrients from the soil and the plant will suffer and slowly starve.
